Your style comes together when you purchase interesting things, not considering trends. It's best to curate your home with things you find that are meaningful to you over the years. Your home will be well designed if every item has meaning and purpose to you. Filling your home with furniture from Restoration Hardware won't give your home a soul.
This is a quote that resonated with me since I read this in my teenage years:
"Going to secondhand stores and finding a little treasure … that meant more to me because it was more of a stab in the dark … because you didn't know if you were gonna be able to afford it and you don't know really what you are looking for, and when you find it, it's more special to you, rather than having a thousand dollars and going into a store like that just buying the whole store"- Kurt Cobain.
When I search for accessories and furniture, I start with a style, designer, or company that inspires me. Once I find items I like, I save them and continue to search based on specific details I see that draw me in. Is the piece lacquered inlay wood? Carved brutalist? Patinated copper? Enameled English dinnerware? Typically, the more detailed and niche the search, the more unique and sometimes affordable the results.
Once you find styles and materials you're inspired by, search these keywords on Facebook marketplace, Etsy, eBay, and Google.
Here are some items I'm currently searching for:
